In general, dogs respond better to positive reinforcement than negative reinforcement. If you’re trying to get your dog to come to you and instead he’s running around the yard like a lunatic, try distracting him with a treat and getting him to sit. If you continually call for him to come, he’ll learn that he only needs to come after you say it 7 or 8 times. It’s best to show him that he should come to you when you say your command the first time. To ensure he does, make sure to heap lots of praise on him and give him a treat when he follows a command properly. Over time, he’ll learn to come on first command.
